Australians in the United Kingdom include Australians who have become residents or citizens of the United Kingdom, as well as the numerous students and temporary workers from Australia who live in the UK.
The 2001 UK Census recorded 107,871 Australian-born people.[1] Estimates published by the Office for National Statistics suggest that, in 2009, this figure stood at 118,000.[2] The highest concentration of Australians in the UK is in south-west London with sizeable communities in Earl's Court, Kensington, Hammersmith, Fulham, Shepherds Bush and Putney.[3] The late-2000s recession has resulted in increasing numbers of Australians returning home from the UK, with 2,700 Australians leaving each month in late 2008, compared to 1,750 a month in 2005.[4] The number of Australians applying for working holiday visas has also fallen.[4]
